Infectious Disease Therapies
OMRIX is developing passive immunotherapy products in several
areas of disease: primary and secondary immune deficiencies, autoimmune
diseases, hepatitis B, West Nile virus and others. Passive immunotherapy
is a term used when activated, specific antibodies are directly
infused into a patient. This therapy is referred to as “passive”
because it involves providing foreign antibodies extracted from
donated plasma to the recipients, as compared to therapies like
vaccines, which encourage the body to make its own antibodies.
Bio-Defense Products
Recent concern that smallpox virus may be used as a bioweapon
has driven governments to stockpile smallpox vaccines, and smallpox
vaccines can sometimes cause complications. OMRIX develops products
that treat smallpox vaccine-related complications. We currently
supply vaccinia immunoglobulin, or VIG, for the treatment of these
complications. We are also developing a more concentrated version
of VIG, high titer VIG, or HT-VIG, which is intended to be used
in smaller volumes for treatment of smallpox vaccine-related complications
and prophylactic immunization in subjects at risk.
